Delivering the Difference to Stancraft Boat Company

What happens when Sierra Forest Products (Upper Canada's sister company in the US) receives a request from a reputable boat company that prides itself on craftsmanship and pursuit of perfection? We answer the call and Deliver the Difference, which was the case when Stancraft Boat Company was looking for African Mahogany for their beautiful boat masterpieces.

Stancraft Boat Company

Founded in 1933, Stancraft was originally built on the shores of Caroline Point, Flathead Lake in Lakeside, Montana. Spanning three distinct generations and being in the American boat building business for over 85 years, the company has created some of the most iconic designs in boating history. From the 22’ Torpedo in 1945 to the 260 Norwester, the 19’ Veruna and day cruisers, they have drawn, sketched and rendered with the utmost precision each time.

With the recent expansion of a new corporate headquarters and manufacturing facility in Hayden, ID – a space that gives them just under 45,000 square feet of manufacturing and over 136,000 square feet of storage and service facilities – Stancraft has paved its way to success through both expertise and the use of superior materials when constructing their fleet of boats. Having built 12 boats this year already with another six in process and one getting ready to hit the water, time is of the essence. It came as no surprise that they got in touch with Sierra, since they were looking for top-notch quality lumber along with the ability to source what they needed, on a deadline.

Why African Mahogany?

African Mahogany is typically used in boatbuilding as it is aesthetically pleasing and easy to work with, glue and finish. However, despite its allure factor and fantastic properties, the native African species is difficult to source with a spec that requires 16ft and longer material.

Committed to helping Stancraft succeed at what they do best, Gary Riekena, Sales Representative from our Coeur d’Alene Team, knew this was a task Sierra could fulfill with our quality products that stand up to customers’ exact specifications time and time again.

Delivering the Difference

Although it wasn’t an easy feat, together with our UCS Global Director of Import Lumber, Hugh Reitz, our team worked diligently to make the impossible happen, while simultaneously supplementing with comparable lumber until the hardwood was sourced.

Over the next three to four months, the 16ft long African Mahogany is being specially harvested and produced in Africa – cut and kiln dried – and will ship to Stancraft in late summer.

Hard work, determination and a deep knowledge of the industry enabled our team to deliver to Stancraft Boat Company what they needed. At Sierra, we take great pride in being able to Deliver the Difference and building a strong rapport with our customers for years to come.
