Details
Iroko, or African Teak, is known for its strength and density. This hardwood is resistant to fungi, insects, and rot. Pair these characteristics with a beautifully deep golden hue and gorgeous luster, and Iroko becomes the ideal exotic hardwood for your exterior and interior furniture and millwork needs.
Why Iroko Lumber?
- Beautiful golden-brown hue with stunning luster
- Resistant to rot, insects, and highly moisture-resistant
- Strong and durable
- Highly workable and easily finished
- Ideal for furniture, flooring, boatbuilding, and cabinetry
Benefits of Plain Sawn Lumber:
The plain sawn cutting pattern optimizes the clear sapwood in Iroko, while also minimizing waste and increasing yield. The clear wood on the outer most faces of the log is what yields the white grade. This cut generates the traditional cathedral grain pattern.

Specifications
Prime Grade Lumber:
Using the National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA) Grading standard, Prime Lumber is a premium grade. Developed for the European export market, Prime captures grades within the Select and Better and FAS 1 Face and better grades and ensures only the very best production, drying and packaging standards are used to meet the demands of that market.
Prime African Mahogany is designed to meet a minimum yield of 83 1/3% (10/12ths) clear-wood cuttings on the best face. Allowed widths start at 6” and wider before kiln drying with lengths 7’ and longer.
Colour and Appearance
Iroko is famous for its golden to medium brown colour that darkens with age. Its course texture and interlocked grains give it an appearance very similar to that of Teak.
Workability:
Iroko is an easily workable hardwood lumber. It is hard and stable, making it an excellent choice for demanding applications such as flooring and boatbuilding. It glues, stains and paints well, although the natural colour is highly desirable. Irokopossesses natural moisture and rot resistance due to its grain structure, making it suitable for both interior and exterior designs. Due to its stability, Iroko is also resistant to shrinkage.
Sustainability:
Iroko is IUCN Red List as Vulnerable or Near Threatened. It is monitored for over-harvesting. Iroko is frequently used as a substitute for Teak due to its appearance, durability, and availability.
Our Iroko is imported from reputable sources of direct African origin. All material is harvested from forest concessions under strict regulations to ensure healthy forest regeneration and longevity. The harvested material is processed and shipped in stringent conformance with all applicable national and international regulations. Great care is taken to make certain that the harvest and import of Iroko remains sustainable, securing availability of this popular species for the future.
We recognize the importance of ethically harvested lumber. As our most valuable resource, sustainably harvested forests increase the rate of carbon sequestration and significantly cut carbon emissions. Wood is a renewable and sustainable material for the built environment, requiring less energy than alternatives like concrete or steel. From harvesting to recycling, lumber is the most carbon-efficient choice for building materials. Wood is of the few elements that can increase sustainability in a building’s life cycle, reduce waste, and create positive biophilic health benefits. Increasingly, architects and designers are calling for a return to wood as the prominent basic building material.
As an early adopter of FSC®, we recognize the importance of sustainably harvested lumber. FSC® Certified lumber is available upon request. Contact your Sales or Specifications Representative for more information.
