Rotary Slice:
Rotary Sliced veneer is peeled from a whole log set in a lathe and turned against a special knife, resulting in a cut that roughly parallels the growth rings to produce a bold and often striated grain pattern. Like unwinding a roll of paper, the ribbon of veneer is then cut to usable widths. Rotary Slice creates exceptionally wide sheets with distinctive grain patterns. Rotary cutting is the only method of producing veneers that create Whole Piece Faces (WPF). This is generally the most economical way to create veneer.
Whole Piece Face Matching:
WPF Matching is a continuous piece of veneer peeled from a log using the Rotary Slicing method. The result is a single sheet of veneer that reveals a continuous grain pattern throughout the sheet. WPF is often desired as it displays the natural grain character of the wood species.
ElementPly™ Applications:
ElementPly™ is suitable for interior projects. Millwork, kitchen and bath cabinetry, hospitality, furniture, and closets are ideal applications for this durable plywood.
Core:
ElementPly™ cores are specifically designed for quality and durability. This exclusive core is created to meet specific application requirements and is specially manufactured to reduce warping. ElementPly™ is intensively quality controlled to perform at the highest of standards.
Natural Birch Colour Grade:
Like Birch lumber, Birch veneer is graded by its colour. Natural Birch veneer, while beautiful, will not have the pristinely white colour of White Birch. Natural Birch will contain the cream, white sapwood imbued with the pinkish tones of the heartwood. A calico mix of light browns, pinks and whites, it may also contain natural grade characteristics of small, closed knots, pin knots, streaks and colour variation. For a rustic and organic feel, or for optimal painting and staining, Natural Birch hardwood plywood is an ideal choice. The heartwood is very apparent in Rotary Natural Birch and tends to have a grain with a wavy appearance and fine, even texture.
C Grade Plywood
The grading standard for Hardwood plywood comes from the Hardwood Plywood and Veneer Association (HPVA). C Grade Plywood allows for unlimited colour and increased natural characteristics. Pin knots, small burls, solid and repaired knots are allowed. As are mineral streaks and vine marks. However, a smooth and sound finish is ensured. C Grade Plywood is ideal for applications where an economical panel with a natural appearance is desired.
Grading Hardwood Plywood is inherently a subjective and difficult process, as although the standard gives rules for specific numbers of defects, there is always personal or operational bias when it comes to the overall appearance of a particular surface. From one grade to the next, not only does variation in appearance get wider, but the amount of overlap between the low end of one grade and the higher end of the next grade down gets wider as well. Because of the inherent individuality of each tree and species, consideration should be given to the overall appearance of the veneer face to determine the appropriate grade for that veneer.
Sustainability:
Birch is widely available both domestically and internationally. Found in Eastern North America, Birch consists of almost 40 distinct species. Birch has been utilized in cabinetry and architecture for centuries and is the ideal choice for long-lasting architectural projects because of its exceptional hardness and wear-resistance. It is an easily grown, sustainably harvested, domestic hardwood.
We recognize the importance of ethically harvested lumber. As our most valuable resource, sustainably harvested forests increase the rate of carbon sequestration and significantly cut carbon emissions. Wood is a renewable and sustainable material, requiring less energy than alternatives like concrete or steel. From harvesting to recycling, lumber is the most carbon-efficient choice for building materials. Wood is of the few elements that can increase sustainability in a building’s life cycle, reduce waste, and create positive biophilic health benefits. Increasingly, architects and designers are calling for a return to wood as the prominent basic building material.
