Specifications

Fabrication

Medium Density Fiberboard Panels are made using a combination of wood fibers, wax, and resin, bonding them together under heat and pressure. The cooled sheets are cut into appropriately sized panels and sanded to a smooth surface for easy painting and lamination. The final panels are dense with a consistent, sandy brown colour.

Thermally Fused Laminate (TFL) is a decorative surface made by bonding a resin-infused décor paper sheet directly to a substrate. By applying pressure and heat, the resin fuses the decorative paper with the substrate to create a finished panel that is ready to be cut and machined.

Workability

Fiberboard is incredibly stable because of its unique close-binding fabrication. The surface is flat and smooth without knots, allowing tools to easily cut through and work the panel. Precise machining and finishing are easily performed.

Standards

The American National Standard Institute (ANSI) created a standard for Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF). It is the North American industry’s voluntary standard that classifies MDF by physical and mechanical properties and identifies product grades. Specifications identified in the Standard include physical and mechanical properties, dimensional tolerances, and formaldehyde emission limits. Also, various overlays and surface treatments have been shown to reduce product emissions significantly.

Sustainability

Regulations by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) establish formaldehyde emissions limits for MDF. To meet the needs of the market, many MDF manufacturers have voluntarily developed no-added formaldehyde (NAF) and ultra-low emitting formaldehyde (ULEF) products.
