Prized for its rich colour and tremendous durability, Teak continues to be one of the premier exotic hardwood species on the market. Its ease of workability makes it a popular choice for woodworkers and architects alike, and it is often considered the gold standard for natural rot and water resistance. The winning combination of visual appeal and durability makes Teak a versatile and reliable choice, ideal for your next luxury hardwood project.

Why Teak Lumber?

  • Highly durable and dependable lumber
  • Alluring straight grain and natural luster
  • Gold standard of rot resistance
  • Easily machined and workable
  • Takes glue and finishes well
  • Luxurious and reliable

Benefits of Plain Sawn Lumber:

Cutting tangentially through the tree’s growth rings, Plain Sawn Teak utilizes the entire log while minimizing waste. The result is a grain pattern that displays a very traditional and recognizable cathedral pattern.

Lumber is a living product, responding to its environment as a tree does to its forest. Humidity, age, area and cut will slightly alter the appearance of the lumber product. The product images on this page are a sample of this species, not an exact depiction of the product you will receive.

Specifications

Please consult with your Sales or Specifications Representative to guarantee you receive the product that best meets your requirements.

First European Quality Teak

First European Quality (FEQ) Teak consists of no sapwood, knots, or streaks. FEQ Teak is heartwood lumber with consistent coloring and uniform, visually appealing grain patterns. This is the highest grade available for Teak.

Please consult with your Sales or Specifications Representative, as we can help you determine what is acceptable to you for colour, flitch size, size and amount of pin knots, rough grain or other defects in order to get you the product that works best for your applications.

Colour/Appearance:

Teak is prized for its rich heartwood, which varies from golden to medium brown. The rich colour darkens with age. Though the grain is typically straight, Teak can also exhibit a wavy or interlocked grain. Figured Teak is popular thanks to its subtle natural luster. Curly Teak is especially enchanting, with its alluring flow of chatoyant ripples. Unfinished, the surface is often uneven and rough, possessing natural oils which aid in water resistance. Teak can be easily darkened with finishes and polish for a timeless and sultry effect. Historically popular, Teak continues to drive the cutting edge of modern luxury with its beautiful figure and rich hue.

Contact your Sales or Specifications Representative for further information on specific colour and character varieties available and best suited for your project.

Workability:

Despite its hardness and natural oils, Teak is a highly workable hardwood. It is easily machined and can be worked with hand tools, though account should be taken for potential edge blunting due to high concentrations of silica. Teak is celebrated for its rot resistance, naturally withstanding water and weather. It is also termite resistant, making it an excellent choice for demanding applications. For enhanced durability and a darker look, Teak can be easily finished and glued. In some cases, a preliminary cleaning and wood solvent application may be necessary to remove excess natural oil and ensure perfect staining and bonding of adhesives.

Sustainability:

Please consult with your Sales or Specifications Representative, as we can help you determine what is acceptable to you for colour, flitch size, size and amount of pin knots, rough grain or other defects in order to get you the product that works best for your applications.

Sustainability:

Primarily harvested throughout Southeast Asia, Teak is a species used throughout the world. Complying with the U.S. Lacey Act, our Teak is sustainably harvested from ethically managed forests. Meranti is sourced from reputable and established suppliers.

We recognize the importance of ethically harvested lumber. As our most valuable resource, sustainably harvested forests increase the rate of carbon sequestration and significantly cut carbon emissions. Wood is a renewable and sustainable material, requiring less energy than alternatives like concrete or steel. From harvesting to recycling, lumber is the most carbon-efficient choice for building materials. Wood is of the few elements that can increase sustainability in a building’s life cycle, reduce waste, and create positive biophilic health benefits. Increasingly, architects and designers are calling for a return to wood as the prominent basic building material.

As an early adopter of FSC®, we recognize the importance of sustainably harvested lumber. FSC® Certified lumber is available upon request. Contact your Sales or Specifications Representative for more information.
