Hardwood Plywood is defined by the types of slicing, matching, and grade of the wood product. With various methods of slicing and matching, veneers can be customized to each wood species and project, resulting in multiple exceptional options to make any project uniquely artful.

Plain Sliced:

Plain Sliced veneer is produced by cutting roughly parallel to the centre of the log, tangentially to the growth rings. Generally, Plain Slicing produces a consistent appearance for each sheet, and creates a cathedral grain pattern on the surface.

Book Matched:

White Maple comes Book Matched, a method in which every other leaf or component of veneer from a log is turned over to produce its mirror image at the joint. Like turning the pages of a book, this matching method produces an aesthetically pleasing appearance across the face.

Why White Maple?

  • Glues, stains and paints well
  • Light, white surface appearance
  • Machines well
  • Evenly textured, straight grain
  • Abundant and readily available
  • Ideal for cabinetry and furniture

Hardwood Plywood products are made from beautiful hardwood, designed to showcase the stunning figure and allure of wood. Often stained or finished, these thin sheets are assembled using an engineered core—from veneer core, particleboard, to medium density fiberboard.

White Maple Colour Grade:

Like Hard Maple, Maple Veneer is graded according to its colour. White Maple Hardwood Plywood is colour graded to solely consist of the brilliant white sapwood of the Maple log. The reddish-brown heartwood is absent in this colour grade. White Maple is pure and delicate, often found in high-end millwork projects and beautiful cabinetry.

AA Grade Plywood

The grading standard for Hardwood Plywood comes from the Hardwood Plywood and Veneer Association (HPVA). Grade AA is the best face grade available, denoting unparalleled visual and structural quality. Grade AA veneer is matched for the highest consistency of grain pattern and colour, displaying the very best a species and cut has to offer. Ideal for high-end applications such as architectural paneling, doors and cabinets.

Grading Hardwood Plywood is inherently a subjective and difficult process, as although the standard gives rules for specific numbers of defects, there is always personal or operational bias when it comes to the overall appearance of a particular surface. From one grade to the next, not only does variation in appearance get wider, but the amount of overlap between the low end of one grade and the higher end of the next grade down gets wider as well. Because of the inherent individuality of each tree and species, consideration should be given to the overall appearance of the veneer face to determine the appropriate grade for that veneer.

Please consult with your Sales or Specifications Representative, as we can help you determine what is acceptable to you for colour, flitch size, size and amount of pin knots, rough grain or other defects in order to get you the product that works best for your applications.

Sustainability:

Hard Maple is primarily harvested in the Northeastern regions of North America. In the United States, Hard Maple is the fifth most abundant hardwood species, representing 7% of standing hardwood timber. Harvest rates versus growth rates based on data from the US Forest Service census show that 46% more Hard Maple is growing annually than is being harvested. Hard Maple is a sustainably harvested domestic lumber.

We recognize the importance of ethically harvested lumber. As our most valuable resource, sustainably harvested forests increase the rate of carbon sequestration and significantly cut carbon emissions. Wood is a renewable and sustainable material for the built environment, requiring less energy than alternatives like concrete or steel. From harvesting to recycling, lumber is the most carbon-efficient choice for building materials. Wood is of the few elements that can increase sustainability in a building’s life cycle, reduce waste, and create positive biophilic health benefits. Increasingly, architects and designers are calling for a return to wood as the prominent basic building material.

As an early adopter of FSC®, we recognize the importance of sustainably harvested lumber. FSC® Certified lumber is available upon request. Contact your Sales or Specifications Representative for more information.
