Found in cabinetry, flooring, furniture and wine and whiskey barrels, the straight grained Rift White Oak is an architecturally foundational lumber. With strong levels of dimensional stability, Rift Prime White Oak pairs a desirable pattern with tested durability. It can be stained and painted easily to match any dƩcor and is exceptionally moisture and rot resistant. White Oak is the ideal choice for time-tested beauty and durability.

Rift Sawn Lumber:

Rift Sawn White Oak is produced by sawing perpendicularly to the growth rings of the tree. It creates a straight grain pattern without any prominent fleck. Rift Sawn lumber expands and contracts across its thickness rather than width. As a result, it is a more dimensionally stable product.

Why Rift Sawn White Oak?

  • Pronounced clean and straight grain
  • Excellent exterior durability and moisture-resistance
  • Increased dimensional stability
  • Glues, stains and finishes well
  • Ideal for flooring, exterior applications, cabinetry, and furniture
  • Easily machinable and workable

Contact your Sales or Specifications Representative for more information on how to configure White Oak for your project.

Specifications

Prime Grade Lumber:

Using the National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA) Grading standard, Prime Lumber is a premium grade. Developed for the European export market, Prime captures grades within the Select and Better and FAS 1Face and better grades and ensures only the very best production, drying and packaging standards are used to meet the demands of that market.

Prime Rift White Oak includes a range of boards with minimum yield of 83 1/3% (10/12ths) clear-wood cuttings on the best face. It allows boards 4ā€ and wider before kiln drying by 6ā€™ long.

Please consult with your Sales or Specifications Representative to guarantee you receive the product that best meets your requirements.

Colour/Appearance:

Rift White Oak displays straight coarse grain. It is a dense hardwood that varies from light tan to medium brown. White Oakā€™s natural finish is subtle and light, making it a perfect organic complement to modern dĆ©cor. Medullary rays are prominent in the White Oak species, and Rift Sawn provides very desirable linear grain without prominent fleck.

Variation in tone and texture exists within different growing regions. As a result, to determine the appropriate colour for your application, it is important to consider region (Northern, Appalachian or Southern), mill, sort and specifications.

Workability:

White Oak produces good results with hand and machine tools. It does not allow liquids to readily pass through it and responds well to steam-bending. White oak glues, stains, and finishes well. Rift White Oakā€™s straight grain restricts its movement which minimizes warping and cupping and is less prone to surface checking. White Oak has increased moisture resistance and can withstand certain exterior applications.

Sustainability:

White Oak trees are native to North America and are widely dispersed throughout the Eastern half of the continent. In the United States, White Oak is the second most abundant hardwood species, representing 16% of standing hardwood timber. Harvest rates versus growth rates based on US Forest Service census numbers show that 50% more White Oak is growing annually than is being harvested. White Oak is a sustainably harvested and abundant timber.

We recognize the importance of ethically harvested lumber. As our most valuable resource, sustainably harvested forests increase the rate of carbon sequestration and significantly cut carbon emissions. Wood is a renewable and sustainable material for the built environment, requiring less energy than alternatives like concrete or steel. From harvesting to recycling, lumber is the most carbon-efficient choice for building materials. Wood is of the few elements that can increase sustainability in a buildingā€™s life cycle, reduce waste, and create positive biophilic health benefits. Increasingly, architects and designers are calling for a return to wood as the prominent basic building material.

As an early adopter of FSCĀ®, we recognize the importance of sustainably harvested lumber. FSCĀ® Certified lumber is available upon request. Contact your Sales or Specifications Representative for more information.
