Why Yellow Birch?

  • Beautifully bright hue
  • Impressive structural stability
  • Uniform appearance and even texture
  • Finishes, polishes and glues well
  • Durable and highly reliable
  • Easily worked

Benefits of Plain Sawn Lumber:

Cutting tangentially through the tree’s growth rings, Plain Sawn Yellow Birch utilizes the entire log while minimizing waste. The result is a grain pattern that displays a very traditional and recognizable cathedral pattern. This technique maximizes the amount of bright sapwood in Yellow Birch for beautifully light and clear cuts.

Lumber is a living product, responding to its environment as a tree does to its forest. Humidity, age, area and cut will slightly alter the appearance of the lumber product. The product images on this page are a sample of this species, not an exact depiction of the product you will receive.

Specifications

Prime Grade:

Using the National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA) Grading standard, Prime Lumber is a premium grade. Developed for the European export market, Prime captures grades within the Select and Better and FAS 1 Face and better grades that have been prepared to the highest standard to meet the demands of that market.

Prime Yellow Birch is designed to meet a minimum yield of 83 1/3% (10/12ths) clear-wood cuttings on the best face. Allowed widths start at 6” and wider before kiln drying with lengths 7’ and longer.

Please consult with your Sales or Specifications Representative to guarantee you receive the product that best meets your requirements.

Colour/Appearance:

Yellow birch possesses white sapwood and light reddish-brown heartwood. The grain is typically straight and even, though slightly wavy grain is not uncommon. Yellow Birch has a low natural luster with occasional wide curled figuring. The growth rings have little colour distinction, making them almost imperceptible. The faint rings pair with the fine texture of Yellow Birch for an even and uniform look across the whole face.

Workability:

Despite its hardness, Yellow Birch is generally easy to work using both hand tools and machinery. The smooth texture and even grain make for a pleasant sawing experience. Yellow Birch can be easily finished or stained to mimic other species, fitting the aesthetic needs of any application. It is easily glued and polished. Some initial shrinkage during drying should be accounted for, but once sealed Yellow Birch is an excellent reliably durable choice at an economical price point.

Sustainability:

Yellow Birch is a widely available hardwood species native to eastern North America, constituting 3.7% of all U.S. hardwood stock. Yellow Birch has been a staple of the lumber industry for centuries, favored for its hardness, durability and workability. Both sapwood and heartwood are sought after, ensuring utilization of the entire tree. This fast-growing species is harvested domestically and sustainably, with growth exceeding harvest rates in most of its highest producing states, like Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Pennsylvania. With continued sustainable growth, harvesting and production, Yellow Birch will retain its place as a mainstay of the domestic lumber trade for generations to come.

We recognize the importance of ethically harvested lumber. As our most valuable resource, sustainably harvested forests increase the rate of carbon sequestration and significantly cut carbon emissions. Wood is a renewable and sustainable material for the built environment, requiring less energy than alternatives like concrete or steel. From harvesting to recycling, lumber is the most carbon-efficient choice for building materials. Wood is of the few elements that can increase sustainability in a building’s life cycle, reduce waste, and create positive biophilic health benefits. Increasingly, architects and designers are calling for a return to wood as the prominent basic building material.

As an early adopter of FSC®, we recognize the importance of sustainably harvested lumber. FSC® Certified lumber is available upon request. Contact your Sales or Specifications Representative for more information.
